About Strome Castle
Strome Castle is a National Trust for Scotland property — a dramatic ruin on the shore of Loch Carron, sitting at the narrowest crossing point of the loch where a ferry once operated. The castle was a MacDonalds of Glengarry stronghold and was blown up by the MacKenzies in 1602 during one of the endless clan conflicts of the period — legend holds that the MacDonalds' wives accidentally gave the game away by throwing water on the gunpowder. The ruin sits in beautiful woodland above the loch shore, with views across the water to the village of Lochcarron on the opposite bank. The NTS maintains the site with free open access and an interpretive panel.

From the A896 south of Lochcarron, take the minor road signed North Strome. Road is narrow — large motorhomes should not attempt it.
