The Applecross Peninsula is one of the most celebrated detours on the NC500, and the Bealach na BΓ ("Pass of the Cattle") is the reason why. This remarkable mountain road climbs to 626 metres via a series of severe hairpin bends on gradients up to 20%, making it the highest road pass in Scotland and arguably the most dramatic road in Britain. The views from the top, on a clear day, encompass the Cuillins of Skye, the islands of Raasay and Rona, and the mainland mountains stretching north and south. The descent to Applecross village reveals a beautiful bay with a white sand beach and the legendary Applecross Inn β one of Scotland's great pubs, famous for its fresh seafood and remarkable sunsets.
Bealach na BΓ : from Lochcarron take the A896 north, then left onto the Bealach road (signed). Alternative coastal road: Lochcarron β Strathcarron β Shieldaig β Applecross (fully accessible to all vehicles).
