About Fortrose Cathedral
Fortrose Cathedral is a beautiful ruin in the heart of Fortrose town on the Black Isle, the remains of a 13th-century cathedral dedicated to St Peter and St Boniface. The building was largely demolished in the 17th century when Cromwell's forces used the stone to build Inverness Citadel, leaving the roofless but elegant south aisle and chapter house standing. Historic Environment Scotland cares for the remains, which are freely accessible. The cathedral is set in a pleasant grassy enclosure in Cathedral Square at the centre of Fortrose, making it an easy and rewarding 20-minute stop. Chanonry Point — the famous dolphin watching headland — is just 1 mile from the cathedral.
