Inverness Castle is the iconic starting point of the North Coast 500, its distinctive red sandstone towers rising above the River Ness in the centre of the Highland capital. The current castle was built in the 1830s on the site of earlier fortifications dating back to the 11th century β the original castle was destroyed by Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite army in 1746 before the Battle of Culloden. For much of the 20th century the castle served as a courthouse, but it has recently been transformed into a major visitor attraction telling the story of the Highlands. The dramatic hilltop site offers excellent views across Inverness and the surrounding countryside.
