About Freswick Castle
Freswick Castle is a 17th-century fortified house incorporating an earlier tower, standing above Freswick Bay on the Caithness coast between Wick and John o'Groats. It is a private estate and not open to visitors, but the exterior can be seen from the road and beach. The bay below the castle is one of the better-preserved Norse settlement sites in Caithness, with a significant Viking-era midden (rubbish heap) that has yielded important archaeological finds. The castle itself presents a handsome, somewhat austere facade above the bay.

Park at the road access to Freswick Bay. The castle is visible from the beach and road. Short stop as part of the drive between Wick and John o'Groats on the A99. Combine with the nearby Bucholie Castle walk for a full coastal castle exploration.

Best Time to Visit
Year round. The bay is pleasant for a short stop in fine weather.
