About Caithness General Hospital

Caithness General Hospital in Wick is the main healthcare facility for the far north of Scotland. It operates a minor injuries unit that can handle non-life-threatening emergencies — cuts, minor fractures, sprains, infections and similar. More serious cases are stabilised here then transferred to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness by ambulance or air ambulance. There is an outpatient pharmacy on site. For anything serious, call 999 immediately — the Scottish Ambulance Service and BASICS Scotland helicopter response cover this area.

Medical Guidance for NC500 Travellers

🚨 Emergency: Always call 999 for life-threatening emergencies. Do not attempt to drive to hospital. The Scottish Ambulance Service and BASICS Scotland helicopter response operate across the Highland region, including very remote areas.

NHS 24 (phone 111) provides round-the-clock non-emergency medical advice. If you are in an area with no mobile signal, drive to the nearest village and ask a resident for the location of the nearest phone. Carry travel insurance that includes medical repatriation — the distances involved in the Highlands make comprehensive cover essential.
