Ullapool is the most lively and complete town on the western NC500, a planned village founded in 1788 by the British Fisheries Society to exploit the herring shoals of Loch Broom. The distinctive grid of whitewashed houses by the loch has a genuine charm, and the town is well-equipped with shops, restaurants, pubs and accommodation. The CalMac ferry to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis departs from here, bringing international visitors and making the harbour busy and atmospheric. Summer Isles boat trips explore the wild coastline and islands north of the town. The Arch Inn is famous for live Scottish music; the Ceilidh Place is a beloved arts venue with an excellent bookshop and restaurant.
On the A835, 60 miles northwest of Inverness. One of the most scenic drives in the Highlands via Braemore Junction and Corrieshalloch Gorge.
